Is Epistocracy Irrational?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Proponents of epistocracy worry that high levels voter ignorance can harm democracies. To combat such ignorance, they recommend allocating comparatively more political power to politically knowledgeable citizens. In response, some recent critics contend epistocratic institutions risk causing even harm, since much evidence from psychology indicates citizens are typically biased, less open-minded, and prone motivated reasoning about matters than their counterparts. If so, perhaps will perform worse epistemically corresponding democratic institutions. Call this 'the problem irrationality'. This paper argues the irrationality be overcome. First, I argue have overlooked several complications regarding psychological data claim shows rational. Second, appropriately designed could overcome if interpreted correctly. first explore whether refined selection mechanisms allow epistocrats avoid empowering rational citizens, before assessing prospects implementing only those with a solid track record reliable performance.

Epistocracy for online deliberative bioethics.

The suggestion that deliberative democratic approaches would suit the management of bioethical policymaking in democratic pluralistic societies has triggered what has been called the "deliberative turn" in health policy and bioethics. Most of the empirical work in this area has focused on the allocation of healthcare resources and priority setting at the local or national level. The variety of ...

Extensive Imitation is Irrational and Harmful∗

Rationality leads people to imitate those with similar tastes but different information. But people who imitate common sources develop correlated beliefs, and rationality demands that later social learners take this redundancy into account. This implies severe limits to rational imitation. We show that (i) in most natural observation structures besides the canonical single-file case, full ratio...

Belief polarization is not always irrational.

Belief polarization occurs when 2 people with opposing prior beliefs both strengthen their beliefs after observing the same data. Many authors have cited belief polarization as evidence of irrational behavior. We show, however, that some instances of polarization are consistent with a normative account of belief revision. Our analysis uses Bayesian networks to characterize different kinds of re...

Discovering and Proving that π Is Irrational

Ivan Niven’s proof of the irrationality of π is often cited because it is brief and uses only calculus. However it is not well motivated. Using the concept that a quadratic function with the same symmetric properties as sine should when multiplied by sine and integrated obey upper and lower bounds for the integral, a contradiction is generated for rational candidate values of π . This simplifyi...

Proof Development with Ω mega : √ 2 Is Irrational

Freek Wiedijk proposed the well-known theorem about the irrationality of √ 2 as a case study and used this theorem for a comparison of fifteen (interactive) theorem proving systems, which were asked to present their solution (see [48]). This represents an important shift of emphasis in the field of automated deduction away from the somehow artificial problems of the past as represented, for exa...
